I first painted this wonderful Italian tomato press as a still life when studying with Israel Hershberg in 2013 in Civita Castellana, in the Roman campagna. Initially I had thought it was a meat grinder, but now, rather belatedly, I’ve drawn a charcoal still life of this remarkable object, complete with tomato. Of course it’s upside down. But you knew that.
