Vespertine Light

Civita Castellana was a noted destination for painters on the Grand Tour, including Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and JMW Turner and others drawn to the remarkable ochre-coloured cliffs of the deep gorges surrounding the town, situated in the Roman Campagna of northern Lazio.

This is the duomo (cathedral) in the distinctive golden evening light of Italy. The artist spent a long hot summer painting the nearby towns under the tutelage of master painter Israel Hershberg of the Jerusalem Studio School’s Italian programme.
