This remarkable arrangement of floats and ropes at an old schoolhouse arrested me in my tracks. Some of the items had come from Russian fishing vessels off the Irish coast, thrown up by Atlantic storms as jetsam on the nearby shoreline. The pillar with its adornments seemed, in my imagination, to be a sort of marine totem. I had previously seen a gate-post with a large metal orb in another part of western Ireland, and made the painting 'Moon Gate'. That one was a weight for sinking nets to the seabed.
