This is a recent substantial reworking of an earlier painting formerly titled 'Night Watchman', although my initial idea was that the natural grouping of post-glacial 'erratics' in the limestone landscape of the Burren suggested a clandestine gathering in which the erect boulder is briefing the other attentive presences. The rook heightens the illusion. In the half-light the rocks take on apparently living forms. In the background a night watchman tends a fire whose smoke reaches the moon.

The Burren, in County Clare and County Galway, is an extraordinary Karst region of sheet limestone plates with deep 'grikes' in which sub-tropical wildflowers find shelter, although the area is at the same latitude as Labrador.

This painting is available from my studio in custom handmade framing.
